Far beyond having babies is the real work of raising them to become stable persons in the society who would solve problems in our world.
In our society today, women have been given the task of populating the world. A woman that is not able to have a child is treated as if she has lost everything or gained nothing. In Nigeria especially, a woman is rated by how many children she is able to bear in a marriage relationship, especially, the male children. It is one problem if she cannot have a child and a much bigger problem if she has children and there is none male amongst them. I do not want to go into the level of insult and maltreatment she is made to experience for these challenges to the extent that some families send her away in the event of death of the spouse. No one is asking the question of the level of preparedness (financially, emotionally, mentally, and informed) of these couples who want to bring up a child?
Do you know that some of the persons who have these babies are still babies themselves even though they may be 40 or 50 years old? If they have not developed in themselves the character and level of maturity to raise themselves, what quality of training would they give to a child? Can you see how we contribute to the growing levels of problems in our country? All these hoodlums on the street, are they not someone’s children?
These are some questions we need to start asking ourselves in order to address some of these challenges.
